Leigh Wells is an American mixed media artist living and working in the Bay Area – someplace I love and have visited a few times myself. Wells’ work features primarily collage and drawing, using layers, shapes and pops of color to hint at things rather than illustrate them directly. Her Versos series conveys the silhouette and texture of plant material, often times confusing the flower with the vase it sits in, turning both on their head in a way that confuses and excites. A dahlia sits beneath a palm frond, cut out in the shape of a daffodil. Her works are like paper ikebana: full of movement, but balanced. Simple, at first, growing more complex the longer you stare.
