Back in February we saw what floral artist Makoto Azuma created for champagne house Perrier-Jouet’s Belle Epoque Florale Edition. They were kind enough (and wise enough) to put together this interview.

I love hearing Azuma’s creative process. Plant Propaganda is about more than just flower-print dresses (although that’s nice, too) – it’s about drawing real, actual inspiration from the form, function and ephemera of plants, just like Azuma does when he attempts to recreate the graceful curl of the Japanese anemone. I also appreciate that his workspace and technique, right down to the surgical steel table and white jacket share the same medical, laboratory feel that was so intriguing to me in the [ 10¹² ] TERRA line. I think it’s the juxtaposition of science and art that I love, which is really the dichotomy at the heart of all plants. Whether it is natural evolution or a botanist’s tedious cultivation, there exists both an exactitude and imperfection, a science and an art, in creating plants that are juicier, tougher, more fragrant or beautiful.
