Do you love variegation but long for something more? Is ‘Tricolor’ just not quite doing it for you? Can’t decide between ‘alba,’ ‘purpurea’ and ‘nigra’? Fear not! This Friday, we bring you plants whose foliage lets you have it all. Red, yellow, green and every shade inbetween, these unfussy varieties offer high color concept while being low maintenance.
Euphorbia ‘Ascot Rainbow’ and Gaura ‘Passionate Rainbow’ are both sun-loving, low-water use selections that stun, while Houttuynia cordata, or “chameleon plant,” is perfect for your moist, shady areas, where it will quickly spread to become a lush ground cover. Mirror bush, or coprosma, is a native of Australia and New Zealand that likes moderate watering, full to partial sun and that can be sheared into a neat, compact shrub. Many varieties are known for their showy, high gloss foliage, including Coprosma ‘Tequila Sunrise’, ‘Rainbow Surprise’, ‘Sunburst’ and ‘Pacific Sunset’.
For the grass lovers out there, both the genus Phormium and Cordyline are overflowing with technicolor options. Phormiums are tough as nails and will thrive in hot, arid locations without issue. Varieties with the most unique coloration include Phormium ‘Rainbow Queen’, ‘ Jubilee’ and ‘Sundowner’. For those in more tropical regions, look into Cordyline ‘Kiwi’, ‘Hawiian Flag’, ‘Strawberries on Fire,’ and ‘Hilo Rainbow.’ These can also be grown as houseplants where there is chance of frost, provided adequate room. Another fantastic indoor selection is Codiaeum variegatum, or croton, a common houseplant grown for its bright, tropical foliage and available in over 100 colorful cultivars.
With so many to choose from, maybe I haven’t made it easier to choose at all! Oops! The good news is, you can’t go wrong with any of these gorgeous garden staples.
