Torkil Gudnason is a Danish-born photographer living and working in New York. Having grown up experiencing the long, lightless winters of Denmark, Gudnason prefers to use bright, exaggerated colors to bring to life classical subjects such as still lives and nudes. Flowers in particular represent a sort of magic vitality for Gudnason. Regarding the springtime, he says “It felt like an explosion, an enormous burst of energy.”
Even after moving to New York, Gudnason finds beauty in the living things around him: “I’ll glance out the window of my studio, and see a flower blooming in a most surprising place. Such a contrast – like magic. I think about how the flower got there and how it survives, how strong flowers are.” Gudnason first started snapping botanical photographs in his free time, as a break from the commercial work he was involved in. But now, series like Electric Blossom are some of his most popular.
