Floral Paintings by Lulie Wallace
Lulie Wallace is a prolific and talented painter living and working in Charleston, South Carolina. The vast majority of her work consists of vibrant tabletop still lives of floral bouquets that would be right at home on anything from Rifle Paper Co. About her work, Wallace says“I find myself attracted to the aliens around me,” those things that “look as though they’ve been plucked from somewhere else, but feel at home in my life.”
I find this sentiment to be an insightful and accurate description of something as innocuous as a bouquet of flowers, which are as alien as any other organism on this planet yet don’t seem out of place in our homes. As Chuck Palahniuk might have written in Pygmy, what a strange ritual we observe, cutting the genitalia off of plants and arranging them in vignettes on the tables where we eat our meals.
And for those of you who, like me, aren’t quite up to the challenge of keeping a fresh arrangement of flowers looking good on your counter at all times, Wallace’s paintings are affordable and accessible enough that you can have one of your very own, no watering required! Just head over to her shop to pick out your favorite.
